The best free Steam games in 2026 are Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2, Apex Legends, Marvel Rivals, Warframe, War Thunder, Team Fortress 2, Destiny 2, THE FINALS, Brawlhalla, Path of Exile and Wuthering Waves. Nine of them are free the way you expect: you install, you play, and nothing blocks the main content. Three work differently. Destiny 2 gives the base game free and sells the campaigns. Warframe sells Warframes, weapons and mods for real money. War Thunder sells progression speed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Path of Exile 2<\/strong> sells early access from $\u00a029.99 on its Steam page<\/a>. Grinding Gear Games announced at Gamescom on 25 August 2026 that version 1.0 arrives on 11 December 2026 and is free-to-play on PC, PlayStation and Xbox, with the last two campaign acts and the Duelist class; early access buyers keep the full game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deadlock<\/strong> has no price and no release date. Its Steam page says that access is limited to friend invites from playtesters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Path of Exile<\/strong> describes its microtransactions as purely cosmetic on Steam, and the official shop<\/a> also sells stash tabs, which are storage. That is no pay-to-win, and it matters to players who plan to trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Destiny 2 is the sharpest case. The free download gives the shared world and seasonal activities, and Renegades, The Edge of Fate, The Final Shape, Lightfall and The Witch Queen are sold separately on Steam. Warframe is generous with a wider shop. Its official wiki<\/a> confirms that Platinum buys prebuilt Warframes, weapons and mods, and that most inventory slots need Platinum. Everything is earnable and Platinum trades between players, so you can play without paying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

War Thunder sells time: the Gaijin store lists premium account subscriptions described as faster progression, plus premium vehicle packs. Free play is real and slow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
