The sixth expansion launches January 2027, kicks off the Godless Realms Saga, and brings the biggest battle system overhaul in the MMO’s 13-year history.

Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold is the sixth expansion for Square Enix’s critically acclaimed MMORPG, officially announced during the FFXIV Fan Festival 2026 keynote in Anaheim on April 24, 2026. Director and Producer Naoki “Yoshi-P” Yoshida revealed that Evercold launches in January 2027 on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, Windows, Mac, and Steam. The expansion marks the beginning of a new story arc called The Godless Realms Saga and brings what Yoshida described as an unprecedented overhaul to the game’s battle system, progression, and quality-of-life features across its 30 million-plus registered accounts.

The Story: Journeying to the Fourth Reflection

Evercold sends the Warrior of Light to the Fourth Reflection, a shard of the Source that is slowly being consumed by an unstoppable encroachment of ice. The teaser trailer showed an elderly woman telling an Au Ra child about a promised land, now frozen over, before a wanderer descends from the stars. This “Wanderer” is the Warrior of Light, reuniting with old allies including Estinien and Alphinaud for a new mission to save a dying world.

Yoshida drew clear parallels with Shadowbringers, where players traveled to the First to halt a Flood of Light. Evercold appears to follow a similar structure but with a frozen, collapsing reflection at its centre. He was careful to note that this is not a reskin of Coerthas or any existing icy zone. The Fourth is an entirely original world with unique threats, including arcane giants and mysterious crystal-powered automatons.

Interestingly, early concept art shown during the keynote revealed surprisingly varied environments. Not everything looked frozen. Lush areas, strange aerial vessels, and a settlement described by fans as a “kitty town” featuring a new cat-like race all appeared alongside the ice. More story details will be shared at the Berlin Fan Fest in July 2026.

Reborn and Evolved: Two Ways to Play Every Job

The single largest mechanical change coming with Evercold is the introduction of Reborn and Evolved modes for all 21 existing standard jobs. Reborn mode preserves the current action system and rotations that players have learned over the past 13 years. Evolved mode offers entirely new rotations with fewer inputs and branching skill paths, placing greater emphasis on job identity.

Both modes can be swapped freely outside of combat, and job level plus equipment are shared between them. Yoshida acknowledged that Evolved will likely be slightly more powerful than Reborn, though both are designed to be viable and balanced for all content, including high-end raids. In practice, even small damage differences tend to push the endgame community toward one option, so balancing these two modes may be one of the expansion’s biggest challenges.

A critical detail: new jobs added in Evercold and beyond will only support Evolved mode. Limited jobs such as Blue Mage and the upcoming Beastmaster will not receive Evolved versions at all.

Two New Jobs: A Tank and a Physical Ranged DPS

Evercold adds two new jobs to the roster. One is a tank and the other is a physical ranged DPS. Yoshida confirmed both are entirely original to FFXIV and cannot be traced back to any previous Final Fantasy title. Speculation based on past games will not work here.

The identities of both jobs remain secret for now. One will be revealed at the Berlin Fan Festival on July 25-26, 2026. The Tokyo Fan Fest in late October may unveil the second. The level cap rises from 100 to 110 with the expansion.

Allagan Tomestones Removed: The New Progression System

After 13 years, Allagan Tomestones are being retired. The daily roulette-based reward grind is being replaced by a weekly progression system where players choose how they want to earn rewards. Dungeons, quests, FATEs, and Frontlines are all valid progression paths. This shift gives players far more flexibility in how they spend their play time each week.

A new Seasons system is also being introduced. Each season encompasses two major patches, and the gaps between patches will be shorter than the current cadence. The gearing system is changing as well: item level will now be tied to the character rather than individual jobs, making it much easier to attempt content across multiple roles without feeling undergeared.

Raid Overhaul and the Evangelion Crossover

Raids in Evercold will feature three difficulty levels: Normal, a new mid-tier difficulty, and Savage. The middle tier is designed to encourage more players to engage with challenging content, bridging the gap that has historically kept a large portion of the community away from Savage raiding.

The standout announcement in this area was the Evangelion x FFXIV crossover. Titled “Ghosts of Desire,” this three-part alliance raid series is being developed by Square Enix with creative supervision from khara, Inc. The crowd at Fan Fest erupted when the Evangelion teaser appeared on screen. Given the anime’s enormous global influence since 1995, expectations for this collaboration are already extremely high.

Additionally, the next Ultimate raid was confirmed as Dancing Mad (Ultimate), featuring Kefka from Final Fantasy VI. It arrives with Patch 7.51 on June 2, 2026, well before Evercold’s launch.

Character Customisation Gets a Major Upgrade

Evercold brings long-awaited improvements to character creation and appearance. Hair colour, skin tone, and eye colour will all shift from preset palettes to a full colour picker system. Players will also gain access to makeup layering, eye shadow options, and the ability to toggle individual gear parts on or off (scarves, shoulder pads, and similar accessories).

Yoshida noted that these features were only possible thanks to the graphical overhaul introduced in Dawntrail. Combined with the new Character Action Skins system (custom animations as cosmetic rewards), Evercold is positioning itself as the most significant expansion for glamour and self-expression the game has ever had.

Same-Region Player Matching Arrives Before 8.0

One of the most impactful quality-of-life changes is coming even before Evercold launches. Same-region player matching will be introduced during the 7.5 patch series, allowing players to match with others across all data centres within their region. This also applies to Party Finder. For context, North American players currently limited to their own data centre’s pool will gain access to all 32 servers across four data centres.

For many players, especially those on lower-population worlds, this may be the single most meaningful change announced at the entire event.

Nintendo Switch 2 Version Launching August 2026

Square Enix President and CEO Takashi Kiryu closed the keynote by confirming a Nintendo Switch 2 version of FFXIV, arriving in August 2026. The Switch 2 edition does not require a Nintendo Switch Online subscription but does carry a separate monthly subscription fee. Existing subscribers on other platforms receive a 50% discount on the Switch 2 subscription. A free early access period of approximately one month will precede the official launch to test server stability.

Patch Roadmap: What Comes Between Now and Evercold

The keynote also detailed the full patch schedule leading up to 8.0:

Patch 7.5 (April 28, 2026): New main scenario quests, new Trial, Echoes of Vana’diel Part 3

Patch 7.51 (June 2, 2026): Cosmic Exploration star Auxesia, Custom Deliveries: Tiisol Ja, Dancing Mad (Ultimate)

Patch 7.55 (July 28, 2026): Hildibrand quest updates, Occult Crescent: North Horn, Phantom Weapon quests

Patch 7.56 (September 8, 2026): New main scenario quests and Beastmaster job introduction

The free trial is also expanding significantly on April 28. It will include everything up to and including Shadowbringers (Patch 5.58), covering A Realm Reborn, Heavensward, Stormblood, and Shadowbringers with no playtime restrictions. Square Enix described this as the equivalent of four full Final Fantasy titles available for free.

Questions Players Are Already Asking

Is there an exact release date for Evercold? Not yet. Square Enix confirmed January 2027 but has not announced a specific day. Based on previous expansion launches, a mid-to-late January window is likely.

What are the two new jobs? Their identities have not been revealed. Both are confirmed as entirely original to FFXIV. At least one will be shown at the Berlin Fan Festival in July 2026.

Will Reborn mode become obsolete? Yoshida stated that both Reborn and Evolved will be balanced and supported for all content. However, he did admit Evolved may be “slightly stronger,” which could influence the meta in high-end raiding.

What platforms will Evercold support? PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, Windows, Mac, and Steam. The Switch 2 version launches in August 2026, ahead of Evercold.

Is the Evangelion raid a limited-time event? No. Ghosts of Desire is a full three-part alliance raid series built into the expansion’s post-launch patch cycle, similar to how previous expansions featured NieR or FFXVI crossover raids.

More Reveals Coming at Berlin and Tokyo Fan Fests

The Anaheim Fan Fest was only the first of three major events this year. The Berlin Fan Festival takes place on July 25-26, 2026, and will share further story details along with at least one new job reveal. The Tokyo Fan Festival runs October 31 to November 1, 2026, and is expected to deliver the final wave of pre-launch information.

Coming off a mixed reception for Dawntrail, Evercold represents a turning point for FFXIV. The combination of fundamental battle system changes, a Shadowbringers-style reflective shard story, the removal of long-standing progression systems, and the sheer ambition of the Evangelion collaboration suggests Square Enix is treating 8.0 as a major reset for the game. Whether Evercold delivers on that promise will become clear in January 2027.

Square Enix revealed Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold at Fan Fest 2026 Anaheim.
