IO Interactive’s 007 First Light launches May 27, 2026 with an original young Bond origin story, sandbox stealth mechanics, and cinematic action. Here’s everything worth knowing before release.
007 First Light is a third-person action-adventure game developed and published by IO Interactive, launching on May 27, 2026 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The Nintendo Switch 2 version has been delayed to summer 2026. It is the first major James Bond video game since 2012’s 007 Legends, and it tells a fully original origin story independent of any Bond film. First announced in 2020 as “Project 007,” the game was formally unveiled in June 2025 and originally set for a March 2026 release before a two-month delay.
A Young Bond Before the Legend
007 First Light reimagines James Bond as a 26-year-old former Royal Navy air crewman recruited into MI6’s newly revived Double-0 programme. Portrayed by Patrick Gibson through performance capture, this Bond is talented but reckless, driven but inexperienced. The story follows his first field missions and the events that ultimately earn him his 00 status and licence to kill.
The narrative draws inspiration from Ian Fleming’s novels and the film franchise but is entirely original. After a heroic act puts him on MI6’s radar, Bond is paired with reluctant mentor John Greenway (Lennie James) to pursue a rogue agent, uncovering a deep conspiracy and a looming coup. The main antagonist, Bawma, described as “the largest black-market dealer in the Western Hemisphere,” is played by Lenny Kravitz. The supporting cast includes Priyanga Burford as M, Alastair Mackenzie as Q, Kiera Lester as Moneypenny, Noémie Nakai as DGSE agent Charlotte Roth, and Gemma Chan as psychology expert Selina Tan.
Lead writer Mikael Vogt, a 14-year IO Interactive veteran, explained that the origin approach shaped the entire tone: “It’s not a dark and gritty or cynical world. It’s dangerous to be sure, but it’s fun and inviting and adventurous and ultimately hopeful. He’s not jaded yet.”
Hitman Heritage, Bond Identity: How It Plays
IO Interactive has been explicit about one thing: 007 First Light is not Hitman in a tuxedo. CEO Hakan Abrak stated that “you’re playing as a spy, not an assassin,” shifting the emphasis from Hitman’s deliberate, puzzle-like assassination setups toward infiltration, investigation, and eavesdropping. The game preserves Hitman’s sandbox freedom but adds significantly more forward momentum, cinematic set-pieces, and deeper combat mechanics.
Gameplay is built around four interconnected pillars:
- Spycraft: Stealth, observation, disguises, pickpocketing, and environmental investigation. Eavesdropping on conversations and inspecting surroundings for hidden clues opens new pathways and objectives.
- Instinct: A versatile resource that lets Bond lure enemies into vulnerable positions, bluff his way out of suspicion, or sharpen focus during combat. The Bluff mechanic turns Bond’s trademark wit into a gameplay tool: convincing a guard that a knocked-out enemy simply fainted, or talking your way past security using gathered intelligence.
- Gadgets: Q Branch devices are woven into moment-to-moment gameplay. The Q-Lens scans environments, hacks electronics, induces nausea in targets for pickpocketing opportunities, and fires poison darts. Players unlock new gadgets progressively throughout the campaign.
- Combat: Inspired by Batman: Arkham’s freeflow system and Uncharted’s cinematic action. Melee combat uses the environment extensively, with dynamic takedowns, throws, parries, and wall-slams. The escalation system keeps firearms as a last resort until the “Licence to Kill” mechanic triggers when enemies turn lethal.
How Does the Licence to Kill System Work?
In standard gameplay, Bond cannot draw firearms freely. Attempting to aim prompts the character to refuse. Only when enemies escalate to lethal intent does the Licence to Kill phase activate, unlocking Bond’s expert marksmanship and integrating ranged weapons seamlessly into the flow of combat. This design decision reinforces the spy-first identity: stealth, bluffing, and gadgets come before guns. When the shooting does start, however, hands-on previews from Kotaku, IGN, and GameSpot all praised the gunplay as responsive and satisfying.
Open-Ended Missions: Iceland, Malta, and Kensington
Press previews in late April 2026 covered roughly three to three and a half hours across three missions. The opening tutorial in Iceland introduces traversal, basic stealth, and Bond’s early character. A training mission in Malta expands the combat and gadget tutorials. The standout was the Kensington gala infiltration in London, which showcased the game’s sandbox design at full strength.
During the gala, players had dozens of approaches available. IGN’s preview described impersonating a journalist, only for the real journalist to show up, forcing rapid improvisation. Kotaku detailed using the Q-Lens to make a patron dizzy, pickpocketing their invitation, then hacking radios and earpieces to manipulate staff routes. A boss encounter against a recurring henchman adapted dynamically: each attack method Bond uses, such as electrifying the floor, gets neutralised by the boss on subsequent attempts, demanding constant creativity.
Cinematic narrative director Martin Emborg described the game’s rhythm as something that “breathes,” alternating between sandbox freedom and tightly directed set-pieces like car chases and mid-air firefights. IO Interactive took inspiration from both the Hitman series and Naughty Dog’s Uncharted for this pacing structure.
Drivable Vehicles and Cinematic Set-Pieces
007 First Light is IO Interactive’s first game to feature drivable vehicles. Art director Rasmus Poulsen called it a “huge challenge” that required bringing “specific driving expertise” onto the team. The gameplay reveal showed high-speed car chases, a mid-air combat sequence aboard a hijacked plane, and the gala mission’s climactic garbage truck escape through London’s back streets and a shopping mall, drawing comparisons to GoldenEye’s famous tank chase scene.
TacSim Mode: What Adds Replay Value?
Beyond the main campaign, TacSim (Tactical Simulation) Mode provides a challenge-based replay system. Unlocked progressively after completing story missions, TacSim lets players replay levels with additional modifiers such as no gadgets, headshots only, or ranged combat restrictions. It features global and friends leaderboards, an XP-based clearance level system, and unlockable cosmetic rewards including outfits, weapon skins, and gadget upgrades. IO Interactive described it as a training facility within Q Branch, guided by an in-game character. TacSim requires an internet connection, while the full main campaign is playable offline after a one-time day-one patch download.
The Glacier Engine Upgrade
IO Interactive’s proprietary Glacier engine, which powered the Hitman trilogy, has received substantial upgrades. A new volumetric smoke system that IO claims “has not been done anywhere before” has been added, alongside ray tracing and fully dynamic global illumination. The PS5 version targets 30 FPS with an estimated dynamic resolution around 1440p. IO Interactive has also confirmed that the PC version will launch with path tracing and DLSS 4.5 support.
PC system requirements are modest at the minimum end: Intel Core i5 9500K, GTX 1660, and 16 GB RAM for 1080p at 30 FPS. Recommended specs for 1080p at 60 FPS call for an Intel Core i5 13500, RTX 3060 Ti, and 32 GB RAM. The game requires 80 GB of storage.
Lana Del Rey and David Arnold’s Title Song
The official title song, “First Light,” was written and composed by Lana Del Rey and David Arnold. Released on April 16, 2026, it marks Arnold’s return to the Bond franchise after scoring five Bond films. The song follows the classic Bond theme formula with orchestral strings and brass, though some fans felt it played the template too safely. The full title sequence debuted on April 17 across IO Interactive’s official channels.

What Hands-On Previews Say So Far
Multiple outlets published hands-on previews on April 30, 2026, and the reception has been overwhelmingly positive. GameSpot called it a potential “Game of the Year” contender, stating it “takes everything the developer has learned from many years of creating, refining, iterating, and evolving Hitman games.” Kotaku described it as “an awesome blend of what makes a good James Bond story work,” praising its sandbox elements and character performances while noting it “plays it safe” mechanically. IGN’s Alessandro Fillari said the preview left him “more confident that the Hitman devs were the right team to take on this reboot.”
Recurring criticisms were minor: the inability to pick up and hide bodies (unlike Hitman), default camera speed feeling slow, and some linear sections limiting player agency. The PlayStation Blog’s hands-on report highlighted how stealth, action, and charm combine to “capture not only the action of the Bond franchise, but the experience of being a smooth and savvy spy.”
Questions Worth Answering Before Launch
Can you play 007 First Light offline?
The main campaign is fully playable offline after downloading the day-one patch via a one-time internet connection. TacSim mode, leaderboards, and challenge features require a persistent connection.
How similar is it to Hitman?
The sandbox mission design and social stealth foundation come directly from Hitman, but 007 First Light is a fundamentally different experience. It has greater forward momentum, deeper melee combat, drivable vehicles, cinematic set-pieces, and a linear narrative structure. IO Interactive summarises the distinction as “playing as a spy, not an assassin.”
Which Bond era does it resemble?
Preview journalists compared the tone to a blend of the Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig eras, mixing slick confidence with grounded intensity. The character is not based on any film actor; IO Interactive created a completely original Bond designed for this interactive medium.
Is this a live service game?
007 First Light features TacSim as an ongoing challenge mode with leaderboards, but the core experience is a complete single-player campaign. IO Interactive has not described it as a live service title, though post-launch content through TacSim updates appears likely.
