Modern Warfare 4 Campaign Early Access Starts October 16: Everything You Need to Know

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 campaign early access launches on October 16, 2026, one full week before the game’s global release. Here’s how to get in early.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 campaign early access officially begins on October 16, 2026. Activision confirmed that players who digitally pre-order or pre-purchase the game can jump into the full single-player campaign one week before the global launch on October 23. The campaign is fully playable offline, meaning you can complete the entire story before multiplayer even goes live.

How to Get Campaign Early Access

Early access is available to anyone who digitally pre-orders or pre-purchases either the Standard Digital Edition or the Vault Edition of Modern Warfare 4. Physical pre-orders do not qualify. This is a digital-only benefit.

Supported platforms for campaign early access include:

  • PlayStation 5
  • Xbox Series X|S
  • PC via Steam, Battle.net, and Xbox on PC
  • Nintendo Switch 2

Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders will open later this year. Pre-orders on all other platforms are already live. Development for the Switch 2 version is being handled by Infinity Ward in partnership with Digital Legends.

Standard Edition vs Vault Edition: What’s Included?

The Standard Edition is priced at $69.99 / £69.99 / €79.99 and includes the base game, open beta early access, and the Hunter Killer Operator skin. A physical Standard Edition is available for console players through select retailers.

The Vault Edition costs $99.99 / £99.99 / €109.99 and is digital only. On top of everything in the Standard Edition, it adds:

  • Hostile Alliance Operator Pack (Price, Valeria, Ghost, and Blix skins)
  • Special Forces Operator Pack (four operators representing the UK, Germany, France, and South Korea, each with native-language voice packs)
  • Signature Weapon Collection (five unique weapon blueprints)
  • Black Cell for one season (includes Battle Pass, 20 tier skips, 1,100 CP, and exclusive content)
  • DMZ Deployment Bonus

If you own Modern Warfare (2019), MW2 Campaign Remastered, or any premium Call of Duty released after those, you qualify for a 10% loyalty discount on the Vault Edition. The discount applies only to direct Vault Edition pre-orders on the same platform and account, and it expires on October 23, 2026.

What Is the Campaign About?

Modern Warfare 4’s campaign centres on a full-scale North Korean invasion of South Korea that rapidly escalates into a global conflict. The story is told through two distinct perspectives, each with a different tone and pace.

The first follows Private Park, a young South Korean soldier experiencing live combat for the first time. What begins as a routine mission descends into chaos as Park and his squad fight to survive on collapsing front lines. Infinity Ward describes this arc as a “zero to hero” journey through impossible odds.

The second perspective belongs to Captain Price, returning in a radically different role. Following the events of Modern Warfare III, Price is now operating outside the system as an outlaw. Driven by revenge and hunting a weapon powerful enough to shift the global balance of power, Price forms uneasy alliances and runs off-book operations that pull him into consequences far beyond his control.

Where Does the Campaign Take Place?

The story spans multiple global locations beyond the Korean Peninsula:

  • Trench warfare across Korea
  • Close-quarters combat in New York
  • High-speed chases through Paris
  • SAS night raids in Mumbai
  • City-wide assaults to reclaim occupied territory

Infinity Ward has stated that the campaign aims for a grounded combat feel, moving away from Hollywood-style action toward something that feels closer to real conflict reporting. The campaign is playable entirely offline, a detail confirmed by Activision in its official blog post.

Multiplayer, DMZ, and New Systems at Launch

Beyond the campaign, Modern Warfare 4 ships with three core modes: Campaign, Multiplayer, and DMZ. Multiplayer launches with 12 new core 6v6 maps set in tactically distinct locations around the world. Dedicated Gunfight maps, Big War maps for vehicle and infantry combat, and the dynamic Kill Block system (offering over 500 map configurations) round out the map selection.

DMZ returns as a full extraction mode. Players deploy solo or in squads into a living combat zone to recover advanced military technology. Activision is calling it the “definitive” Call of Duty extraction experience, with dynamic weather, shifting objectives, faction systems, and story-driven missions written by the main campaign team.

A major new technical feature is the Ballistic Authority system, which unifies precision aiming, physical weapon handling, realistic audio propagation, and enhanced visibility. Bullets now travel exactly where the weapon is pointing, and laser sights show the real trajectory in real time.

Theater Mode, previously exclusive to Black Ops titles, is also confirmed for Modern Warfare 4. PC players will benefit from offline shader compiling, and weapon build code sharing returns from Black Ops 7.

When Is the Open Beta?

Activision has not announced exact open beta dates yet, but based on prior Call of Duty release cycles, the beta is expected to run sometime between late August and mid-September 2026. Pre-ordering any edition of Modern Warfare 4 grants early access to the open beta. Digital pre-orders receive automatic early access without needing a code, while physical pre-orders will receive separate beta codes.

Is MW4 Coming to Game Pass?

No. Activision confirmed that Modern Warfare 4 will not be available on Xbox Game Pass at launch. Based on the current arrangement, the game is expected to arrive on Game Pass approximately one year after release, placing the earliest possible date around October 2027.

Questions Players Are Asking

Can I finish the entire campaign during early access?
Yes. The full campaign is available from October 16. You have a full week to complete the story before the game’s global launch on October 23.

Is there a last-gen version?
No. Modern Warfare 4 is current-gen only. There are no PS4 or Xbox One versions. Infinity Ward opted to focus development entirely on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2.

Which studios are involved in development?
Infinity Ward leads development. Beenox handles PC optimisation. Digital Legends is developing the native Nintendo Switch 2 build. Additional support comes from Raven Software, Sledgehammer Games, Treyarch, High Moon Studios, Activision Central Design, Activision Shanghai, Demonware, and Activision QA.

Will multiplayer have cross-play?
Cross-play details have not been officially confirmed yet, but every recent Call of Duty title has supported cross-play across all platforms, making it highly likely for MW4 as well.

Modern Warfare 4 launches globally on October 23, 2026, across PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. For those eager to experience the campaign first, October 16 is the date to mark. Pre-order digitally, and you can step into Private Park’s and Captain Price’s war a full week ahead of everyone else.
