State of Decay 3: First Gameplay Reveal, Release Window and Everything We Know

Undead Labs unveiled the first gameplay trailer for State of Decay 3 at Xbox Games Showcase 2026. The open-world zombie survival game arrives in 2027 on Xbox, PS5, PC and Game Pass, featuring a map four times larger than its predecessor, 4-player shared world co-op and dynamic Plague Nests.

State of Decay 3 received its first proper gameplay reveal at Xbox Games Showcase 2026 on June 7, confirming a 2027 release window across Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, PC (Steam), and Xbox Game Pass. Built in Unreal Engine 5 by Undead Labs, the sequel features a map roughly four times the size of a single State of Decay 2 map, a shared-world co-op system for up to four players, revamped melee combat with dual attack types, and dynamic Plague Nests that act with their own agenda.

What Did the Xbox Games Showcase Reveal?

The over-three-minute gameplay trailer showcased open-world exploration, settlement building, weapon crafting, co-op play and intense zombie combat. Creative Director Kevin Patzelt confirmed in an Xbox Wire interview that everything in the trailer is 100% in-game capture with no CGI. The over-the-shoulder shots reflect the actual playable camera, giving viewers a genuine sense of how the game will feel to play.

Patzelt stressed that the trailer only scratches the surface. While it leans heavily on moment-to-moment combat, the real depth of State of Decay 3 lies in its simulation systems, community evolution and settlement management. More of these systems will be shown in the months ahead.

When Does State of Decay 3 Release?

Xbox confirmed a 2027 release window. “We’ve been working on this for a while and we’re aiming for a 2027 release,” Patzelt told Xbox Wire. Alpha testing has been live since May 2026, with a community-driven playtest already in progress. The studio plans to expand into beta testing later this year. Players can sign up for the waitlist at StateofDecay.com.

For context, the game was first announced at Xbox Games Showcase in 2020 with a cinematic trailer that, by the studio’s own admission, did not represent the actual game. Six years later, we finally have real gameplay and a concrete release target.

Which Platforms Will It Be On?

State of Decay 3 is coming to Xbox Series X|S, PC (Steam and Microsoft Store), PlayStation 5 and cloud platforms. It will be included with Xbox Game Pass from day one and supports Xbox Play Anywhere, meaning a single purchase covers both console and PC. This marks the first time a State of Decay title will be available on PlayStation, reflecting Xbox’s evolving multiplatform strategy.

How Big Is the Map?

Patzelt revealed that the playable space is approximately four times larger than a single State of Decay 2 map, and the entire world is fully open from the moment a player joins. There are no locked regions or progression gates. The larger environment supports expanded exploration, scavenging and the ability to claim multiple settlements across different areas of the map.

How Does Co-Op and the Shared World Work?

The most significant structural change is the shift to a shared-world multiplayer system built on dedicated servers rather than the peer-to-peer model of State of Decay 2. Up to four players can explore the same world with untethered co-op, meaning there is no movement leash. Players can stick together, split up across opposite ends of the map, or play entirely asynchronously on the same save file.

Friends can join the world, build facilities, expand settlements and progress the story even when the host is offline. The technology behind this system has roots in Obsidian Entertainment’s Grounded, which used shared save code originally authored by Undead Labs. That code was extended by Obsidian and then fed back into State of Decay 3 for a richer implementation.

Solo players have not been sidelined. Undead Labs confirmed that solo play remains the most popular way to experience the franchise, and the single-player experience is designed to feel complete and fully featured on its own.

What Are Plague Nests?

Plague Nests are the evolution of State of Decay 2’s Plague Hearts. Described by Patzelt as “an enemy with its own plans,” they function as dynamic hubs that spawn threats, grow over time and react to player actions. Each Nest rolls a unique “persona” that determines its behaviour: some spread aggressively and fast, while others dig in and grow dangerously tough to lure players in.

Consequences are central to the design philosophy. “If you wanted to sit on a hill and watch your settlement burn, the game’s gonna do it,” Patzelt said. “The enemy is coming towards you whether you act or not.” Because Plague Nests occupy the most dangerous zones in the world, they also guard the best loot, creating a compelling risk-reward loop that drives exploration.

How Has Combat Changed?

State of Decay 2 had a single attack button. State of Decay 3 introduces both a quick attack and a power attack, expanding melee combat significantly. Players can now nudge one zombie back, strike another, then dodge, creating what Patzelt describes as “fight circles in a sandbox game.” The addition fundamentally changes how encounters play out, especially when special infected types like Juggernauts enter the fray.

On the enemy side, the zombie roster carries over from the previous game but with each type given distinct behaviour. Slow, desiccated walkers behave differently from fresher zombies, and armoured variants add another layer. Classic fan-favourite enemies return with new evolved forms.

Settlement Building and Community Management

Players can now claim up to three settlements simultaneously, each customisable for different strategic priorities. One base might focus on food and water production while another stockpiles ammunition and explosives. Facility construction, defence reinforcement, homemade explosive crafting and survivor healing are all part of the expanded base-building toolkit.

The Enclave system from State of Decay 2 has also been expanded. NPC survivor groups scattered across the world have their own desires and perspectives. Players can build trust with them, form alliances and eventually recruit them into their community, adding another strategic dimension to world management.

Maker Culture and Weapon Crafting

Set years after the initial outbreak, the easy-to-find supplies of previous games are gone. In Patzelt’s words, “all the golf clubs are bent” and “all the machetes you can get from a hardware store are shattered.” Survivors now craft improvised weapons from scavenged materials, embodying a “maker culture” philosophy that runs through the game’s art and systems.

The serrated machete shown in the trailer is one example. Some variants have rebar welded to the back of the blade for better dismemberment at the cost of higher stamina usage. These are genuine gameplay trade-offs that players can opt into. As facilities are upgraded, new weapon recipes, consumables and usable items unlock. The studio plans to expand this system post-launch.

Permadeath Returns With Deeper Consequences

Permadeath remains a core pillar. Lose a community member and they are gone permanently, along with everything they knew. Undead Labs is investing in narrative systems that make these losses resonate not just for the player but for the other characters in the world. “There’s nothing bigger than losing a community member, especially if there’s someone that you invested a lot of time and energy into,” Patzelt explained. “I think we need to do a better job of showing that sacrifice is meaningful and how it might impact the community.”
