Path of Exile 2 Return of the Ancients: Full Endgame Rework, New League, and the Road to 1.0

Path of Exile 2’s massive 0.5.0 update, Return of the Ancients, arrives May 29, 2026 with a complete endgame overhaul, the Runes of Aldur league, two new Ascendancy classes, and over 50 hours of new content. Game Director Jonathan Rogers confirmed this is the final major Early Access update before 1.0, which is targeted for late 2026 after ExileCon in November.

Path of Exile 2 patch 0.5.0, titled Return of the Ancients, launches on May 29, 2026 at 1 PM PDT across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S simultaneously. Game Director Jonathan Rogers calls it the single biggest update in the history of either Path of Exile game. The patch delivers a complete Atlas endgame redesign, the Runes of Aldur league, two new Ascendancy classes, over 15 new bosses, more than 30 new unique items, and five endgame storylines totaling over 50 hours of content. It is also confirmed as the final major update before the game exits Early Access and reaches its full 1.0 release.

When Does Return of the Ancients Launch?

The update goes live on Friday, May 29, 2026 at 1 PM PDT on all platforms. Full patch notes are expected roughly one week earlier, around May 21. Grinding Gear Games pushed the gap between livestream reveal (May 7) and actual launch to three weeks instead of the usual one, citing the need for significantly more testing due to the scale of endgame changes. The previous league, Last of the Druids (0.4.0), will have run for nearly six months by the time 0.5.0 arrives.

How the Atlas Endgame Has Been Completely Rebuilt

The Atlas system, which has been one of the most criticized aspects of Path of Exile 2’s Early Access, receives a ground-up redesign. Instead of a sprawling, loosely connected web, the endgame now centers around a massive Fortress that rises from underground, built around clear progression paths and structured storylines. Each major league mechanic (Breach, Delirium, Ritual, Expedition, Abyss) has a dedicated starting zone with its own quest chain leading to a pinnacle boss fight.

The Atlas passive tree has been completely remade. Players can now unlock the entire tree, removing the frustration of constant respeccing. Many nodes offer a choice between several options, making it easier to customize without heavy friction. On top of this, the Masters of the Atlas system acts like an Ascendancy for your Atlas tree. You align with specific masters who grant unique bonuses: one might double unique drops from pinnacle bosses in exchange for limiting you to a single attempt per fight.

Rogers told PCGamesN that experienced players can expect to complete a single zone’s quest chain in a solid four-to-five-hour session. GGG is also considering repositioning zones between leagues to keep the early endgame feeling fresh each season.

Runes of Aldur: The New League Mechanic

The Runes of Aldur league introduces Ezomyte Runesmithing, a new crafting system centered on risk and reward. After rescuing the blacksmith Farrow in Clearfell, players interact with Ezomyte Remnants found throughout areas. You choose symbols to inscribe on them, and each symbol determines both the reward type and the elemental empowerment applied to enemies that spawn. Fire runes mean fire-flinging enemies. Moon runes bring celestial hazards. The more ambitious your rune setup, the harder the encounter becomes.

Over 100 new runes are available for crafting gear in specific ways. The system introduces Runic Ward, a secondary defensive pool that also serves as fuel for new Kalguuran skills that cost Runic Ward instead of mana. These skills have no color alignment, meaning no attribute requirements, opening up more flexible build options. Low-level uniques can be amplified into late-game-viable forms through Runeforging.

Once you reach endgame, the league mechanic integrates into Expedition runs. A new currency type called Alloys allows crafting of modifiers that are not normally possible on items, adding another layer to the endgame crafting loop.

Two New Ascendancy Classes: Spirit Walker and Martial Artist

Spirit Walker is the new Ascendancy for the Huntress class. It revolves around three Azmerian animal spirits: Stag, Owl, and Bear. Each spirit shifts gameplay in a different direction. Stag-focused builds lean into stampede-style engagements, Owl setups emphasize ranged and projectile enhancement, and Bear provides a spirit companion. The most exciting feature is The Natural Order, which allows you to tame beast bosses like the Mighty Silverfist or the Chimeral Beast and bring them into battle as active allies.

Martial Artist is the new Monk Ascendancy. It creates illusions that repeat your strikes, manifests bell-like detonations that punish clustered enemies, and damages all enemies in a radius on every critical strike. Way of the Mountain covers the Monk in stone for damage mitigation and enhancement. Way of the Stonefist converts any equipped gloves, including uniques, into powered-up stone variants. A unique runic tattoo mechanic allows multiple runes to be socketed directly into your character rather than into gear.

How Breach, Delirium, Ritual, and Expedition Change

All four core league mechanics from launch receive major reworks with dedicated questlines and new pinnacle encounters. Delirium now features a visible depth indicator that tracks how far you push into the fog, replacing guesswork with clear escalation feedback. Rewards scale transparently with depth.

Breach integrates Path of Exile 1’s Keepers of the Flame systems and the Genesis Tree, which you gradually nurture to expand the items it can grow. Ritual rewards are now restricted to uniques and omens only, and surplus tribute can be sacrificed to approach the King of the Mists. Expedition expands into a full ocean exploration system with procedural island networks, logbooks, and milestone bosses like Medved and Uhtred the Stardrinker.

Abyss receives a new questline involving massive Abyssal fractures on the endgame map. Completing encounters across three faction paths unlocks access to the Well of the Souls and the Vessel of Kulemak.

In-Game Build Guides and Quality of Life Improvements

One of the most impactful additions is the in-game build guide system. Players can import .build files directly into the client, which then highlights passive tree points, recommends skill and support gems, and provides item slot notes. The system dynamically adjusts recommendations based on character level. GGG has partnered with Maxroll to offer guide files from launch day, and Path of Building is expected to add export support as well.

Campaign progression now includes subtle environmental clues (locust paths, blood trails, signposts) to guide players toward objectives without removing exploration. The Atlas map gains a live-updating search bar. The in-game trade market is improved with easier price comparison, and shift-alt-clicking an item lets you instantly check its market value. League challenges also arrive for the first time in PoE 2, offering the Knight of Aldur cosmetic armor set across eight completion tiers.

When Is Path of Exile 2 Version 1.0 Coming?

Return of the Ancients is confirmed as the last major content update before 1.0. Rogers has stated that he wants the full launch to happen in 2026, likely after ExileCon, which takes place on November 7-8 in Auckland, New Zealand. Community consensus and developer hints strongly suggest a December 2026 release window, potentially near the game’s two-year Early Access anniversary on December 6.

The 1.0 release will include the complete campaign with Acts 5 and 6, three Ascendancies for every class that makes it in, additional quality-of-life improvements, expanded language support, and a Mac client. Not all base classes will be available at 1.0 launch, with remaining classes coming in post-launch updates. The game will transition from paid Early Access to completely free-to-play at that point.
