Final Fantasy VII Revelation Announced: The Remake Trilogy Concludes in Spring 2027

Square Enix has officially revealed Final Fantasy VII Revelation, the third and final chapter of the Remake trilogy. Launching across all platforms simultaneously in spring 2027, it introduces a full open world, new playable characters and the FITS job system.

Final Fantasy VII Revelation is the official title of the third and final entry in Square Enix’s acclaimed Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy. Unveiled at Summer Game Fest 2026 on June 5, the game is set for a simultaneous launch across PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S and PC in spring 2027, coinciding with the 30th anniversary of the original 1997 game. Director Naoki Hamaguchi and Vincent Valentine voice actor Matthew Mercer took the stage to premiere both a cinematic reveal trailer and an extended five-minute gameplay demonstration.

Release Date and Platform Lineup

Revelation is confirmed for a spring 2027 release window, meaning players can expect it sometime between March and May. The most significant change compared to Remake and Rebirth is the day-one multiplatform launch. Both predecessors were timed PlayStation exclusives at launch, but Revelation will arrive simultaneously on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC via Steam, Epic Games Store and Xbox PC.

This makes Revelation the first mainline Final Fantasy title available on Xbox at launch since Final Fantasy XV in 2016, and the first on a Nintendo console since Final Fantasy VI in 1994. Square Enix has stated that all platform versions will maintain gameplay and presentation parity.

Exploring the Entire Planet with the Highwind

The trilogy’s open-world ambitions reach their peak in Revelation. Players gain full control of the iconic Highwind airship, enabling free-flight exploration across the entire planet. In a series first, the game introduces a skydiving mechanic that lets players parachute directly from the airship to land in any accessible zone, seamlessly transitioning from air to ground.

Confirmed explorable regions include the Nation of Wutai, the Mideel Archipelago, the outskirts of Midgar and the snowy Northern Continent. Both Wutai and Rocket Town were notably absent from Rebirth, making their appearance in Revelation particularly significant for long-time fans. Square Enix emphasises freedom of choice: players will decide where to travel, who to help and in what order as the planet fights for survival.

Vincent Valentine and Cid Highwind Join the Playable Roster

Two fan-favourite characters become fully playable party members in Revelation. Vincent Valentine, a former Shinra test subject, fights using rapid gunplay alternating with bestial transformations. His Galian Beast form, which functioned as a Limit Break in the original game, can now be activated at the press of a button for devastating damage output.

Cid Highwind, the party’s resident pilot, plays as a lance-wielding Dragoon. His moveset revolves around leaping gap closers, aerial combo chains and area-of-effect spear strikes. Together with the existing cast of Cloud, Tifa, Barret, Aerith, Yuffie, Red XIII and Cait Sith, Revelation offers the most diverse party composition options in the trilogy’s history.

The FITS System: Classic Jobs Meet Modern Combat

Revelation introduces FITS, short for Function Integrated Tactical Suitwear. This system allows every playable character to equip specialised outfits that fundamentally change their combat moveset and playstyle. Each outfit corresponds to a classic Final Fantasy job archetype, with Warrior and Black Mage confirmed so far.

During the gameplay demonstration, Cloud was shown switching to a Warrior outfit for enhanced offensive abilities, while Tifa took on the Black Mage role for magic-focused combat. The Materia system, the core build-crafting feature throughout the trilogy, remains fully available alongside FITS, creating layered customisation depth: character choice, FITS loadout, Materia setup and party synergy all interact to form strategy.

Combat System: The Trilogy’s Apex

The hybrid real-time action and Tactical Mode battle system established in Remake and refined in Rebirth is described by Square Enix as “perfected” in Revelation. Players can seamlessly swap between party members and chain Active Time Battle abilities across characters instantaneously. With nine potential party members and the FITS system adding job-class flexibility, team-building options become significantly more sophisticated.

Story: The Final Stand Against Sephiroth

Revelation picks up directly after the events of Rebirth. Cloud and his companions face a world on the brink of annihilation: Meteor looms in the sky, the Planet has awakened colossal Weapons guardians in self-defence, and Sephiroth nears godhood through the Reunion, his plan to merge alternate timelines into a singular reality under his control. The party’s journey leads to the Northern Crater for a climactic final confrontation.

Square Enix describes the game as “the unforgettable, breathtaking finale to one of the most ambitious projects in video game history and the culmination of 30 years of Final Fantasy VII storytelling.” The script was written by Kazushige Nojima and had been finalised by January 2025.

Save Data Bonuses for Returning Players

Players who own save data from earlier entries will receive exclusive bonuses in Revelation. Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade save data unlocks the Chocobo & Moogle Summon Materia, while Final Fantasy VII Rebirth save data grants the Phoenix Summon Materia. Both Remake Intergrade and Rebirth are currently available across all platforms for newcomers who want to experience the full trilogy before Revelation arrives.

Development Journey and Technical Foundation

Preliminary work on the third entry began alongside Rebirth’s announcement in June 2022. Full production started in November 2024, and by April 2026, director Hamaguchi confirmed that playtesting was already underway, revealing he had personally completed the game roughly 40 times. The team made a deliberate decision to continue developing on a modified Unreal Engine 4 rather than migrating to Unreal Engine 5, citing existing familiarity and feature maturity.

The shift to a simultaneous multiplatform launch was driven in part by Square Enix’s internal disappointment with Rebirth’s sales performance as a PlayStation 5 timed exclusive. The publisher restructured its strategy to “aggressively pursue” multiplatform distribution for tentpole releases, which directly shaped Revelation’s launch plan. Hamaguchi confirmed this strategic pivot did not affect the game’s development timeline.
